AN ENCHANTING INDIAN CLASSICAL DANCE FORM
Odissi also known as Orissi it is one of the eight classical dance forms of India. It originates from the state of Odisha which is situated in the Eastern part of India. This dance is an expression of traditions, culture, ideas, feelings, beliefs and stories. The techniques of movement in odissi are built around the two basic postures of the chowk and the tribhangi.
Odissi is particularly distinguished from other classical Indian dance forms by the importance it places upon the Tribhangi which literally means ‘three parts break, the independent movement of head chest and pelvis, it is a very feminine stance which accentuates the beauty and grace of the feminine form.
Mudras are an integral part of this dance. They are used for healing, concentration and expanding consciousness. They are also used to communicate deep feelings and tell intricate stories.
The music used for Orissa dance in mainly Hindustan Classical music and the instruments used are Pakhawaj, Bansuri, Manjira, Sitar and Tanpura.

Setup
The dance lessons in the online learning format are imparted by using the popular and free video sharing portal of ‘Skype’. All that the student requires at her / his end is a laptop or desktop with a good web camera and speakers and an uninterrupted internet connection of speed 10 mbps or more.

LEVEL – III : DANCE ITEMS
1. Mangala Charana : It is an opening item of Odissi repertoire and an invocatory piece. It begins with floral offering and then follows the salutations to the mother earth.
2. Battu : It is a pure Nrittya, the dancer shows a series of sculpturesque poses like Veena, Mardala, Venu and Manjira.
3. Vasant Pallavi : In Pallavi the dance moves into the graceful poetic form where nrittya is displayed. Pallavis are named after the Ragas they are based on.
LEVEL - IV : ABHINAYA (GITA GOVINDA)
It is a Sanskrit word that connotes acting or representation. So Abhinaya means to carry a story or message to the audience through dance forms
LEVEL – V : MOKSHYA
It is a pure nrittya, the dance is performed in fast tempo accompanied by the recitation of the rhythmic syllables. The dancer through this finale dedicates herself to the supreme power.

ABOUT YOUR TEACHER
Kanika Roy is an exponent of Odissi Dance since childhood and still continuing to practice, perform and also train students of classical dance. She initially learnt the Dance under Guru Mayadhar Raut at Sri Ram Bharatiya Kala Kendra, New Delhi and later mastered the same under Guru Ambika Panicker. Kanika holds a Master’s Degree in Performing Arts in Classical Dance (Odissi) Has worked at Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA)as a Junior Research Fellow.
She has performed Dance Recitals at various prestigious forums like Delhi Doordarshan, Pragati Maidan, and many national and international cultural events. Currently in addition to imparting teachings in Odissi dance she is also undergoing training herself for gaining higher levels of expertise and finesse in the dance form under the guidance of renowned Odissi exponent Ambika Paniker.
In addition to her pursuit of classical dance Kanika has been associated with the teaching profession for more than fifteen years. In her career of a teacher she has organized numerous cultural events and choreographed many semi classical and folk dance recitals by school children.
She also holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Guidance and Counselling and has practiced using dance therapy as a means of counselling. Being qualified and having acquired skills and experience in three different spheres of child education Kanika takes pride in tutoring and guiding children to achieve Life Skills so as to achieve a holistic development and be better equipped to face the challenges of life.
